About Us
Who we are:Founded in April 2006, the Hrafn Broethr were set up to allow the larger Batsoc society an opportunity to explore the Dark Ages within this area of the country, focusing on the time period between the withdrawal of Roman soldiers from the British Isles in 410 through the invasion of the germanic Saxons, Angles and Jutes, who established a series of kingdoms across what is now England and South Scotland before their eventual defeat by a Norman army lead by William the Bastard at Hasting in 1066. The society exists to look at the effects these changes have had upon the native Celtic peoples and the Anglo-Saxons, and to reenact the major battles that shaped the future of this country.
However, since September 2006, the Hrafn Broethr group have split from the Batsoc group based at the University of Birmingham, in order to join the House of Edgbaston, a local reenactment group, allowing the group to accept members from outside the university, and reducing the reliance of the group on university funding and rules. However, the House of Edgbaston is maintaining strong links with Batsoc, and is actively training with the society. This has happened largely because of interest from potential members outside the university, as well as a number of older members finishing their courses of study.
During 2007, we managed to improve ties with Draum Broedr, the Leicester group which inspired us. This has resulted in improved training and organisation, to the extent that the group should be able to stand as an independent group within the Vikings!. As of November 2008, we are now officially a sub-group of Draum with our own officers and constitution.

Hrafn Broethr represents a mercenary band from the borders between the Anglo-Saxon and Danish borders of Mercia, with an army chiefly composed of Danish-influenced Anglo-Saxons and Saxon-influenced Danes, as such, it has its own internal problems, but all grievances can be forgotten for the promise of a few pounds of silver (at least for a while).
We are continually trying to research Edgbaston's history throughout this period. If you have any information about this then please Contact Us.
