About Me

I have been a Dark Age re-enactor since November 2002, when my then girlfriend convinced me to start coming to meetings while at university. I am a current member of the Draum Broethr Viking society based the the University of Leicester, and have spent the last 5 years re-enacting battles throughout England and Wales, focusing particularly on the Rus' Vikings of the 10th Century and the Anglo-Saxons of the 11th (although I have also played Normans and Vikings of this period).

I feel that one of the greatest things about re-enactment is that it gives a good opportunity to learn new skills and gives a good excuse for exercising at least twice a week. Since joining, I have picked up a number of skills, such as leather-working, shoe making and basic tailoring, had a go at skinning animals and authentic cookery, as well as learning to wield a variety of different weapons.

One the battlefield, I prefer to fight as a heavy skirmisher, protecting the ends of the shield walls from enemy attack (as well as getting an opportunity to ham it up in front of the audience), generally armed with an axe and shield, in order to cause the maximum impact on enemy skirmishers. But now, as Jarl of the Hrafn Broethr, I am now having to learn to keep within my unit so that I will be able to effectively command them on the battlefield, however, I am not going to let that stop me getting my hands dirty, so I am now retraining as a Shock Troop and Beserker, both roles in which my weight can help me cause more damage (even if it means I'll probably be one of the first casualties).

In the future, I intend training up the Hrafn Broethr as a solid close-order shield formation, complete with two-handed spears and daneaxe, however, like all things this will take time, but there's always next year...
